Intense interest in edge calculation has grown rapidly in recent years, and Gartner estimates that “... by the end of 2023, more than 50% of large enterprises will have at least six edge computing use cases deployed for IoT or immersive experimentation, compared to with less than 1% in 2019 ". As companies automate and digitally transform their core business operations, edge computing will play a key role in providing real-time processing and analysis of the data required to generate business intelligence and add value.
cultural change
In a recent report, Exploring Edge: The 12 Frontiers of Edge
Computing, Gartner details how edge computing is dramatically expanding the capabilities,
business prospects and use cases of the IoT. We think this is important because
culturally we are moving from simple technological connections to more
immersive, interactive and natural connections. The benefits of edge computing,
such as reduced latency, better bandwidth management, and touch-free
operations, are needed to support these new expectations for how people,
companies and objects interact with each other.
Business, things and people
Gartner has identified 12 categories of edge computing use
cases, divided into three different types of interactions. They focus on
business, things and people. In our opinion, these types of interactions drive
activities such as industrial automation, video streaming, financial
transactions, and smart meters. This can be useful for organizations looking to
strategize to support their digital transformation vision and create a strategy
that includes multiple edge computing use cases, rather than treating each use
case as a single deployment.
Creating an edge computing strategy
We believe every organization will need to decide which use
case categories are most relevant to help them achieve their edge computing and
digital transformation goals. IT and OT infrastructure managers must work with
business leaders to identify the business opportunities that emerge from the
deployment of advanced computing as part of an overall digital business
strategy. Planning long-term, multi-year advanced computing deployment plans
for use cases, and developing guidelines and standards will help organizations
select the right vendors to succeed.
